Rapacious

The point is ladies and gentlemen that greed, for lack of a better word, is good. ~ Gordon Gekko (played by Michael Douglas in the 1987 movie "Wall Street")

   Answer below.

You might recall an email I sent a while ago where I talked about Liesl Johnson's excellent email newsletter "Make your point", where she dissects a new word every day.

(You can read that newsletter here: http://archive.aweber.com/tacticstime/CXlYv/h/Tactics_Time_Chess_Newsletter_.htm) and if you haven't signed up yet for her emails, you can sign up here: http://www.hilotutor.com/myp.html

Today's word is "Rapacious", and Liesl defined it as:

   Meaning:
Rapacious people or things are extremely greedy and just grab whatever they want, like predators.

I kind of chuckled when I read this definition (I was not familiar with this word), because it perfectly described my style as a chess player, and something I have been working on for the past year!

I think this might be a common "side effect" of people like me who focus on lots of tactics training (to the point of ignoring every other aspect of the game).

Basically I became very good at winning material.  If there was a loose pawn or piece, I could figure out how to grab it, and would do so.

The problem is that I had zero common sense if this was actually a good idea or not!

The other problem is that if you use a computer to look at your games (like I did), the computer will also think that it was a good idea to grab the material!

But when stronger players like Life Masters Brian Wall and Joel Johnson would look at my games, they would think, "What the heck are you doing"?

After suffering soul crushing losses, where my "need for greed", ended up being a bad idea (like losing to Sara Herman where I kept grabbing material even thought I was up several pieces, totally ignoring my defense and allowing her counter play to chase my king all over the board), I have finally learned that not all material is good material.

   Answer:

   35. Rxf5!! gxf5 36. Bf6# with the rare lone bishop checkmate.

35...gxf5 isn't forced, so Black can avoid the checkmate, but then is just down a rook.

   Happy Tactics!
