  • The chess book cover design contest that we ran turned out great!

  • Then on Wednesday August 5, I am heading to the 116th Annual U. S. Open Chess Championship in Phoenix Arizona!  I am playing in the 4 day section, where you play 9 rounds in 4 days.  There is also a 9 day and 6 day schedule.  The Arizona Biltmore hotel where it is being held looks really amazing!
 
  • On Tuesday's newsletter I mentioned that Daniel Herman would likely make it to an expert rating by the end of summer.  In fact, he made expert that very day, by getting a draw against Life Master Brian Wall at the Denver Chess Club.  Brian has a "not on my watch" policy where he doesn't like to allow players to cross the line to master or expert by getting rating points from him.  Brian says "I don't mind if they go around me, but I don't like it when they go THROUGH me!" Before the pairings Daniel's mom Shirley actually publically predicted this! I thought that was hilarious

   Jeff plays really well with his knights, and here they were in ninja move trapping the white king with 41...Nf3+ 42.Kf1 Rh1#
