In 2013 Colorado Chess President Paul Covington did a "Chess March" across the country.

You can see his blog about the event here:  http://paulschessmarch.com/

During the trip Paul and his wife Nell drove across the country in a mobile home visiting different chess clubs and chess tournaments.

Here are some of the tournaments and clubs that Paul visited on his march:

  • April 13–14, 2013 Arkansas Open, Fayetteville, AR
  • May 7, Spartanburg Chess Club, Spartanburg, SC
  • May 8, Charlotte Chess Club, Charlotte, NC
  • May 17-19, Tennessee Senior Open, Crossville, TN
  • May 20, Winchester Chess Club, Winchester, KY
  • May 21, Charleston CC, Charleston, WV
  • May 23, Newark CC, Newark DE
  • May 28 – June 2, 2013 US Senior Open, Tarrytown, NY
  • June 10, South Shore Chess Club, Massachusetts
  • June 19, Dover Chess Club, New Hampshire
  • June 20, Cumberland Library Chess, Rhode Island
  • June 20, UCONN chess club, Connecticut
  • June 24, Waterville Chess Club, Maine
  • June 27, Brattleboro Chess Club, Vermont
  • July 13,  Ft Wayne CC Summer Open, Indiana
  • July 19-21, 6th Chicago Class, Illinois
  • July 27 – August 4, US Open, Madison, WI
  • August 6, Rochester CC, Rochester, MN

As of now, Paul has visited every state East of Colorado, and has only 7 states remaining to visit.

Here is a picture of Paul with his mobile home.

Great job Paul!  Sounds like a very fun trip!

   Answer:

This is a tactical ideal you absolutely MUST know.  This one comes up all the time for both white and black.

Here 9.Bxf7+ wins a pawn.  If 9...Kxf7 10.Ng5+ Ke8 11.Qxg4 and White gets back their bishop.

The keys elements of this position are:
  • White Bishop pointed at f7
  • Black King on e8
  • No Black Knight on f6 (which would protect the bishop on g4)
  • Undefended Bishop on g4.
  • Ability to give a safe knight check on g5
You have to check that these types of elements are there, and always calculate!

   Happy Tactics!

   Your Friend,
  Tim
