Game of Clones | |||||||||
his position comes from my clone's game played yesterday at the Attack of Clones, Round 3, against Dean Brown.
In the position on the right it is White to move.
Answer below.
A few months ago Shirley Herman asked Colorado players what types of tournaments they like best. My (honest) answer was "I like tournaments with a gimmick". I love anything unusual and creative - odd time controls, some sort of theme or celebration (Halloween tournaments for example), 24 hour tournaments, odd pairings, teams, etc. The Denver Chess Club yesterday had probably THE most unusual tournament I have ever played in - ATTACK OF THE CLONES! The brilliant idea (created by Kevin Seidler), is that you can enter the tournament more than once (you and your "clones"). So theoretically you could finish first, second and third! The only rule was that you can't play yourself (one of your clones). All clones play at the same time, under normal USCF rules, with some minor modifications for score keeping in time trouble. The Denver Chess Club has very creative organizers who love to try new ideas, which I really like. They are willing to take risks, and aren't afraid of failures. The tournament was a blast! Four players played with the maximum number of three clones
The event has already been rated, and the cross table looks crazy - http://www.uschess.org/msa/XtblMain.php?201505166672
In a few cases different clones were paired against each other in more than one game. So for example in Round 3, Chris Peterson and Brian Wall played two games against each other at the same time. (Chris clone #1 against Brian clone #2 and Chris Clone #3 vs Brian Clone #1 for example) I played the same opponent in both round 2 and 3 (he played 2 different Tim clones). The logistics actually worked out really well, because it was a spacious area, and we could move tables around, and not everyone was playing with clones. I had a really crazy day yesterday, and could only play in two of the four rounds. My gf Alisha's mom graduated from Pikes Peak community college, and the ceremony was yesterday morning at the New Life Church in Colorado Springs. So I attended that in the morning, then drove up to Denver in time for round 2. It was also Alisha's 31st birthday, so she drove up to Denver with her mom and daughter, and we all went to Casa Bonita for dinner. If you have ever watched South Park, there is an episode where Cartman and crew go there. I had never been there before, and had a blast. They have cliff divers, fire jugglers, pirates, gun fights, etc. So over all it was a very fun and memorable day. If your chess club is looking to try something different, I highly recommend doing an Attack of the Clones! Answer:
White has mate in two with 20. Rd7+ Nxd7 21. Qxd7# I was really happy with this game. My chess coach Joel Johnson described it as "AWESOME!!!". There are a couple of good tactics in it. The tactic 6.Bxf7+ which started the whole king hunt is a really good one to know (and comes up all the time). One of the things I have been working on is Joel's idea "PLAY FOR MATE". In the past I would be very materialist. For example on move 10 I could have won a piece with 10.Bxg8, which I saw, but instead focused on going after the King, and found the best move 15. Be8+. Happy Tactics!
