GAME TIME!
Hey there

Not sure if you are an American football fan or not, but if so, hope that you enjoy the game!

I think it should be a good one (unlike last year's blowout), and hopefully the referees will weigh Tom Brady's balls before the game!

(um, ...phrasing)

Here is a chess tactic, and a couple interesting links for you to check out before kickoff....

25 Things Skilled Learners Do
This is a really good article that I read recently.  Some of the topics are ones I have talked about before, such as trying new things, seeing mistakes as learning opportunities, learning the same thing in different ways, and learning by teaching others.

There are some good gems in here that you can apply to your chess game, or any area of life.

Zombie Apocalypse Now
The Denver Chess Club is holding a very clever tournament coming up in March called the Zombie Apocalypse.

The idea is to bring former chess players "back from the dead".

Any chess player who has been inactive for 5 years or more gets a free entry to the tournament, as well a free USCF membership for one year, state dues, etc.

Tactics Time 2: The Second One!
Image
Tactics Time 2 is now out in paperback, from Publisher New in Chess.

This book contains 1001 hand picked problems, which come from the games of amateur chess players like you and me.

It contains the types of tactical problems that you are likely to see in your own games - pins, forks, skewers, mating nets, trapped pieces, overloads, under defended and loose pieces, etc.

I've heard from literally hundreds of players from around the world that these books have helped them improve and win more games, and I think it can help your chess game too.  Even solving just a handful of positions on a consistent basis can add up to seeing tangible results in your game.

Check it out!
Pushing Wood
This past week I donated $50 towards the making of a documentary called "Pushing Wood".

They have a 6 minute trailer up.  You can actually see me in it at the 58 second mark hunched over a board.

Looks like it could be quite interesting...
