Happy (Belated) Birthday to Life Master Brian Wall who turned 60 on Thursday, March 26! Jacques Delaguerre wrote a great article about Brian for Nigel Davies' excellent "Chess Improver" blog, which you can read here: http://chessimprover.com/uscf-life-master-brian-douglas-wall-turns-60/ I really enjoyed this article a lot. Jack included some great Brian Wall quotes, includes a list of his accomplishments, love of unorthodox openings, and gives a sense of what a great, and fun guy Brian is. I was a little surprised the article did not mention "The Fishing Pole", which Brian is a world famous advocate for (1. e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Nf6 4. 0-0 Ng4!?). The article also didn't mention Brian's newsletter, which goes out to hundreds of people. I enjoy it a lot. Although, you have to be prepared for your inbox to get blasted with 10-15 emails per day from Brian lol. https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/BrianWallChess/info The article also left out how Brian has got really involved with chess organizing. He is president of the Denver chess club, and a "member at large" for the Colorado State Chess Association (CSCA). His recent "zombie apocalypse" tournament was a huge success, bringing 15 chess players "back from the dead". The tournament gave a free USCF membership, free CSCA membership, and free tournament entry to anyone who had not played a rated game in the past five years. One of the zombies, was Randall Zandstra, who was featured on the Discovery Channel's TV Show "I almost got away with it", and spent years as a fugitive living under multiple different identities. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8elPQcdNLw I personally can't wait for Brian's "Attack of the Clones" tournament where players can play more than one rated game at a time. I even bought a clones T-Shirt to wear :-) https://denverchess.com/tournaments/tla/attackoftheclones2015 Shirley Herman recently posted a 30 second video of me and Brian playing at the Colorado Springs Open a few weekends ago. Here is a link to that game: http://www.viewchess.com/cbreader/2015/3/28/Game1479744285.html I'm not sure if everyone can see this video or not, but it says it is "public". Here is the link: https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=10204233309774194 So, Happy 60th Birthday Brian, and thanks for all you give to the Chess World! 19.Nxe6! grabs a pawn, attacks the queen, and sets up a discovered check. If Black recaptures 19...fxe6 20.Rxe6 Kd8 21.Rxc6. White is up two pawns, and Black's kingside protection is destroyed. These types of tactics are Brian's bread and butter! Happy Tactics!
