his position comes from the game Francisco Baltier (1636) vs Artharva Vispute (1537), Colorado Open, Round 3, August 30, 2014.
White to move. Answer below.
This weekend was the Colorado Open, held at the Doubletree Hotel in the Denver Tech Center.
There was a Game 10 quick tournament held on Friday night, August 29, and the main event was 5 rounds on August 30-31.
There was a HUGE turnout with 158 players! This is probably the biggest tournament in Colorado for the past 10 years. There were many players that I had not seen in years.
On Sunday we held the annual "membership meeting", which went very smoothly and was very well run.
There was a vote taken on lowering the annual dues, which was voted down by a large measure (current dues are $15 per year, and the proposal was to lower it to $10, with a few different options thrown in).
A vote was also taken to keep the Colorado tour the same, or to change it, and it was decided to keep the way that it was done in the 2013-2014 year. The tour is a system where players earn points based on participation and results.
President Randy Reynolds, and Treasurer Richard "Buck" Buchanan both decided to not run for reelection. Thank you both Randy and Buck for your service! You guys did great work!
New Board Members:
Every candidate ran unopposed. I think this is going to be a great board, with lots of experience, and good ideas.
Colorado Tour Winners:
My buddy Francisco Baltier came in from Tucson to play in the tournament, and we had a good time hanging out. We did a podcast with Brian Wall, and Daniel Herman, and Devon Wall (Brian's son) on Saturday night after round 3. Brian is a great story teller, and we have stories in there about the Fishing Pole opening, the Lemming Opening, the Polish opening, and much more. You can listen here: http://tacticstime.com/podcast/colorado-open-podcast
The tournament was very well run. Thanks to Buck and Joe Haines, who did a super job!
Dean Brown received a lifetime membership to the CSCA for his years of hard work and dedication to Colorado Chess. Well deserved!
The new Colorado State Champion is Jesse Cohen who won clear first with 4.5 out of 5, and the new Colorado Quick Chess Champion is Chris Peterson who won on tie breaks against Brian Wall and Gunnar Andersen. Billy Willson (who I had not seen in years, and it was nice to see him) won the under 1800 section. Great work guys!
I was really excited to see how Colorado Chess is growing and blossoming!

Answer:
10. Rxe7 removes the knight from defending the c8 square. 40...Kxe7 41. c8=Q. The computer actually likes moves like 40.Be4, 40. g4 and 40. Bxg6 slightly better, but I like the "keep it simple" approach the Francisco took. So if you found these moves, those are good also :-)
I had a nice conversation with Atharva's dad, Pankaj, on Thursday night at Panera Bread on Thursday. Turns out we both worked at Fedex at the same time last year, and knew a lot of the same people. Atharva is getting really good, really fast, and I think he is on the Colorado chess ratings fast track!
Happy Tactics!
