his position comes from the game WGM Melanie Ohme of Germany (2301) vs WGM Olga Girya of Russia (2484), Round 4 of the 41st Chess Olympiad, played this past week in Norway.
White to move. Answer below.
This game and position was brought to my attention by my newsletter reader Vince, AKA "Uncle Vinny".
Vince writes:
I don't know if you subscribe to Daniel King's youtube channel, but he's been interviewing lots of players at the Chess Olympiad, asking them about how they learned chess, how their games are going, etc. TB:
BTW, if you want to know more about the Olympiad that is going on, here is a quick summary of the event from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/41st_Chess_Olympiad
The 41st Chess Olympiad, organized by the Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE) and comprising an open and women's tournament, as well as several events designed to promote the game of chess, takes place in Tromsø, Norway from 1 August to 14 August 2014.
Total number of 1,570 players participate at the Olympiad, with 881 in the open and 689 in the women's section. The number of participating teams is 177 from 172 countries in the open section and 136 from 131 countries in the women's section. The reigning World Champion, Norwegian Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, is one of the eight official ambassadors. He also plays on board one for the Norwegian team.
All of the major chess websites are covering the event - I really liked the interface on the https://chess24.com/en/olympiad2014 website that Vince mentioned, which is the official website of the event.
