I ask a five year old @CCSCSL what his favorite opening is: "Back rank checkmate" #hewon ~ funny tweet from @JenShahade on twitter

chess tactics position

T

his position comes from the game Elena Donaldson-Akhmilovskaya vs Wang Pin, 2nd China-USA Summit (2002), and is a tactic (#854) I saw in the very nice book, 1001 Chess Exercises for Beginners: The Tactics Workbook that Explains the Basic Concepts, Too, which my friends at New in Chess gave to me.

   Answer below.

   Hola Amigos y Amigas!

I am in Spain right now with Mia and her mom and daughter on vacation.

We are staying in Calpe, which is really beautiful.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calp

I have never been to Spain before, and I am really enjoying it.  I am taking a break from the sun after getting a little burnt yesterday, so thought I would send out a quick newsletter!

I took three years of Spanish in High School, which I have been attempting to use when speaking to the people who live here, even though 99% of them seem to speak English!  Many also speak German and 3-4 languages in total, which is really impressive.  The people are super friendly!

When I was in High School Spanish class the professor always called us by Spanish names.  There were two people named "Tim" in the class - me and a huge football player.   So she always called me "Timoteo pequeño" (Little Timmy), and he was "Timoteo grande" (Big Tim!).

Here is a pic of me at the street market this morning...

This pic reminded me of this funny exchange from the movie The Hangover...

Phil: [sees Alan with his new satchel] You're not really wearin' that, are you?
   Alan: Wearin' what?
Phil: The man purse. You actually gonna wear that, or you guys just f***in' with me?
Alan: It's where I keep all my things. Get a lot of compliments on this. Plus it's not a man purse. It's called a satchel. Indiana Jones wears one.
   Phil: So does Joy Behar.

Hope you are having a nice summer as well!

   Your Friend,

P.S. Before I left for Europe, I did a podcast interview with GM Maurice Ashley, which you might enjoy.  Maurice has a lot of passion and great ideas for promoting chess!  I really enjoyed speaking with him.  http://tacticstime.com/podcast/maurice-ashley-podcast/
