It's amazing what we can accomplish if we refuse to be afraid ~ Clint Hurdle

his position was posted on facebook by my friend Rob Hartelt, and I thought it was cute.  I am not sure the source of it.  It looks like it might be from Polgar's "brick" perhaps?

In the position on the right it is White to move

   Answer below.

I got a lot of feedback about my email the other day where I was talking about US Soccer team coach Jurgen Klinsmann, and his "We can't win" mentality.

First a correction - I should have given the entire quote, which is "We cannot win this World Cup, because we are not at that level yet. For us, we have to play the game of our lives seven times to win the tournament."

Several people pointed out that my comparisons to things like Buster Douglas beating Mike Tyson were not good ones, because although Douglas beat Tyson once, there is no way he could beat Tyson 7 times.

Now honestly, I have very little knowledge about the world of soccer, or how the tournament works, so it might not have been the best analogy.

My main point was that upsets DO happen, and the "experts" and "predicted outcomes" are not always right.

I must take issue though with your criticism of Klinsmann's interview about the World Cup - he is clearly making that statement (although it's only half the quote) to emphasize his main point, which is to say that success for the US team cannnot be measured in whether they win the World Cup or not but in more realistic and achievable goals, i.e., a steady progression. In all the examples you gave it was a single win or lose scenario.

I would definitely agree with you if he had said; "we cannot win a game in this World Cup", but success for the US must be measured in qualifying from the group stages, not winning the event which is an unrealistic goal. UnAmerican maybe, but that's exactly what Klinsmann is getting at...

    Thanks Kevin!  Great points!

I was mostly trying to tie it into a chess point of view... I see a lot of people who look at the pairings, and might see their opponent is 200 points higher than them, so mentally they become afraid, give up before the game has even started, and adopt a "We can't win" type of mindset, which obviously is not good or productive.

Here is an example of the type of coaching and mindset that I prefer:

As you might know, I am a fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team.  Last year before a game in September, manager Clint Hurdle sent out the following story to his team:

Tim Wrightman, a former All-American UCLA football player, tells a story about how, as a rookie lineman in the National Football League, he was up against the legendary pass rusher Lawrence Taylor. Taylor was not only physically powerful and uncommonly quick, but a master at verbal intimidation.

Looking Tim in the eye, [Taylor] said, "Sonny, get ready. I'm going left and there's nothing you can do about it."

Wrightman coolly responded, "Sir, is that your left or mine?"

The question froze Taylor long enough to allow Wrightman to throw a perfect block on him.

It's amazing what we can accomplish if we refuse to be afraid. Fear -- whether it's of pain, failure or rejection--- is a toxic emotion that creates monsters in our mind that consume self-confidence and intimidate us from doing our best or sometimes even trying at all.

Make a difference today.

Love Clint

The same night that he sent this message, the Pirates loved Clint Hurdle back. They defeated Yu Darvish (one of the best pitchers in baseball), 1-0, for their 82nd win, then hugged their manager for always hugging them. No one is sure whether his email had freed their minds or whether the players even read it. "I think it's 50-50," a team employee said.

But, either way, just knowing that he was always up at night thinking of them, that he was always on his phone typing to them, had helped the 2013 Pirates change one of the losingest cultures in sports.

The Pirates had 20+ losing seasons, and this was their first baby step towards success (having a winning season).  Hurdle has said that a lot of his work was on changing mindsets and beliefs and the "culture of losing" within the organization.
