Jan 2014 Colorado Chess Informant
|
The new issue of the Colorado Chess Informant Magazine is now out. There are some great articles about the Carlsen-Anand match, plenty of games, and great contributions from - GM Tejas Bakre
- Joe Fromme
- Paul Anderson
- Randy Reynolds
- Buck Buchanan
- Todd Bardwick
- Colin James III
- and more
Editor Fred Spell has created a beautiful
magazine. His use of fonts and colors and layout looks really professional. We are lucky to have him here in Colorado. He does an amazing job. The magazine comes out four times a year. This issue marks the Ten Year anniversary of my Tactics Time column in the magazine! The first column appeared in January 2004, when I was editor of the magazine. This month's column is on page 18. The Magazine is in PDF format, and is about 3 Megabytes in
size.

Boston Chess Congress
|
Some exciting news - Tactics Time got invited by the Massachusetts Chess Association Education Committee Chair, Nicholas P. Sterling, Ph.D., to an chess education expo next weekend in Boston! My Tactics Time co-author, Anthea Carson will be attending the expo, which is held in conjunction with the Boston Chess Conference tournament, which
is run by Bill Goichberg and the Continental Chess Association. The tournament and expo are being held at the Hyatt Boston Harbor, near the Logan airport.
So if you are planning on being at the tournament, be sure and say hi to Anthea! I know she is excited about it!

Both GMs somehow missed the simple move, 47...Qh8+ forking the White King and Rook.
White allowed this move, when he played 47. Kh2?? and Black responded with 47...Kh4??
I met Timur Gareev (the white player), last year when he did a 15 board blindfold simul in Denver, during Brian Wall's Corner Bakery Open on
16th Street mall in Denver. He is currently ranked the #3 player in the US.
Timur is an amazing player, and this just shows that *everyone* makes mistakes. It is especially easy to make mistakes when you are tired, which is a lesson I was reminded of many times during Shirley Herman's 24 Hour tournament last weekend!
This blunder happened during the last round of the tournament, which had a 8 way tie for first place. If Black had found this move, they
would have got sole first place, and won thousands of dollars. The USCF talks more about this tournament here: http://www.uschess.org/content/view/12483/738/
