GAME TIME!
Super Bowl Sunday
Hey There -- Happy Super Bowl Sunday and Groundhog's day!  The people here in Colorado are pretty excited about the Broncos being in the big game this year.  Should be fun!

Here are some news and notes, and articles that I have found interesting, that you might enjoy also!
Chesscafe Book Review
While Anthea was at the Boston Chess Congress Tournament earlier this year, she met Jim DuBois, and gave him a copy of the Tactics Time paperback book.  Jim lives in Maine, and is a FIDE National Instructor., USCF TD and certified chess coach, and chess journalist.  He wrote a great review of Tactics Time for one of my all time favorite chess websites, chesscafe.com, which appeared this week.

Filters and Masks
Speaking of chesscafe, I absolutely LOVE Dan Heisman's Novice Nook from this month.

Dan has written a lot of brilliant stuff over the years, and I think this is one of his best columns ever.

In the column Dan helps answer a question that has haunted me while writing tactics newsletters and books, which is "Why is it that players will miss these 'easy' tactics in a game, but as soon as I present the exact same position as a 'tactics problem' - they can solve it instantly."

Great insights from Dan.

Attack of the Drones
I also found this article by IM Jeremy Silman on chess.com to be very amusing.

This line especially cracked me up: "While looking through the comments about this subject, I enjoyed many people's views, but I was forced to reach for my blood pressure meds when I noticed the usual "Tactics is 99% of chess!" drones who once again promised you success if you followed their advice (though they are only in the 1200 - 1500 rating range)."

I am probably a "Tactics drone" myself - although I don't think anyone out there is claiming you can make GM by only doing tactics - that is ridiculous, and a "straw man" argument by Silman.  I DO think that for class players in general, that the study of tactics is the FASTEST way to make a large jump in rating, and that most games at the class level are decided by tactics.

Chess Superminatures

I bought this kindle book Friday night after Stephen Dann mentioned it to me.

The book is a lot of fun - It is kind of like a cross between "Logical Chess Move by Move", Tactics Time, and Alex Dunne's yearly collection of miniatures in "The Check is in the Mail".

The book is perfectly formatted for kindle, with tons of diagrams (pretty much a diagram for every move) - 1. e4 (diagram) 1...e5 (diagram), etc.

After a series of light hearted and funny annotations and background about the players and positions and opening, the author presents the "kill shot" as a puzzle - with 4 different hyperlinked moves to chose from.  I probably would not have done this part myself (I don't like to give hints in general) - but for players less than 1000 it might be nice for them to have different moves to choose from.

Several of the game ideas I had presented myself - but from different players!  One game in the book was a trap in the Caro Kann from a Brian Wall game ICC that I just put out about 2 weeks ago (the nymphomaniac attack).  This book had the same game, but different players.  Same with a trap in the Bird.

I recognized a lot of the traps and tactics from other books and software, but most people are not going to be as familiar with the subject.  And even if I had seen the tactic before, I hadn't always seen the full game.

Opening traps, and short games are a ton of fun - and I think the author is on to a great idea here.  I read about half the book in one sitting, and will probably finish it today.

The kindle book is only 3 dollars, so I would say is a "no brainer" to pick up.
