his game features an interesting tactic sent to me by one of my newsletter readers.
In the position on the right it is Black to move.
Answer below.
I received a nice email from Richard Dickinson of Suffolk UK. Richard writes (slightly edited to take out the section where he reveals the tactic):
Tim,
Here is a game I played today Sunday (22.09.2013) on FICS (5 minute rated blitz). I played as black against a player who is rated 1420 & I am struggling with 1117 rating (I firmly believe I should be 1400-1600 but I struggle!). I spotted a nice tactic for black. White has just played Re3-Re5 after I pushed the pawn to attack the Rook (f4). It depended on White not pushing his centre pawn majority by playing e6 and thankfully he played Ne4 instead so I could go ahead with my tactic and when my tactic worked I went on to win the game (white resigned).
Can you see my plan? It uses two tactics at once-that's clever for me! I ended up winning a game that I shouldn't have been allowed to! I was lucky for once but it is good when you can pull a winning tactic now and again! That is why blitz can be both fun and frustrating! However by using TACTICS your chess rating will improve :-)
Thanks Richard Dickinson Tim's response:
Thanks Richard for the game!
Besides the interesting tactics above, White did not see this coming but also didn't make use of his assets (ie his central pawn majority as e5 would have prevented this) and fiddled around and lost a game from a good position Richard's chess YouTube channel is rpdatutube - do take a look at his video journey & journal to chess self improvement! http://www.youtube.com/user/rpdatutube/videos

Answer:
29...Bg4 30. Rc3 Bxd1 28...Qh4 allows 29...Bg4 as the white pawn at h3 is pinned to the White King by the Black Queen and the Black bishop Bg4 skewers White's rook-Black will capture a rook for a bishop by the use of the 2 tactics of a pin and skewer!
Happy Tactics!
