   Answer below.

Today I want to share some news and notes, and reader mail.

  • Congrats to 16 year old Isaac Martinez who just passed the USCF 2000 mark!  Isaac is Anthea Carson's son.  Anthea took Isaac to his first tournament when he was just three days old.  Isaac climbed all the way from a rating of 100 (the lowest possible rating) all the way to 2000!  You can see his rating history here: http://www.uschess.org/msa/MbrDtlMain.php?12911979  Congrats!
  • One correction - a couple weeks ago when I passed 2000 for the first time, I said that the USCF only gives "bonus rating points" if the tournament was at least 4 rounds.  This is not correct - it is a minimum of three rounds to get bonus points (that way a "quad" tournament would count).  I was getting confused with the USCF "norms" system - you have to play at least 4 rounds to get a "norm". Thanks to Klaus Johnson of North Carolina for pointing out the mistake.  You can read more about the "norm" system here: http://www.glicko.net/ratings/titles.pdf

  • Got a funny comment via email from "Tactics Time" ebook reader Danny G who wrote, "I had a funny feeling, My girl took the kindle for the last 5 days to devour a book as she usually does, meaning I could (only) take a glimpse on tactics time, and the result is that when I went back to my games, I felt like how to say it, like "Popeye without his spinach" kind of thing hehehe. was scary. felt like my super powers had abandon me... fortunately she is done now and I get to have my daily fix of tactics. =)"

  • Danny also asked about the "80/20" rule, which I sometimes talk about.  I wrote: "Here is more info about the 80/20 rule... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Pareto_principle

Basically what I am saying is this:

Say you have one player that does this study plan

    20% openings
    20% tactics
    20% strategy
    20% middlegame
    20% endgame

this would make sense - it treats each aspect of the game of equal importance.  So you study each in an equal amount.

but the 80.20 rule says that you are going to get 80% of your results from 20% of your effort!

So in this case the 20% (in my opinion) is the tactics!

So knowing this, you should modify the plan to be this:

    80% tactics
    20% everything else

That way you are focusing on the 20% that accounts for 80% of the games being won or lost.

So my idea is that 80% of all the class player games are being won/lost because of a tactic of some sort (or could have been won with a tactic if both sides missed it).  The other 20% are being won/lost/drawn because of all the other factors combined.

    Hope that helps!

Entire books have been written on the subject, so I am just scratching the surface here."

   Answer: 28...Rxg2+!! 29.Kh1 Rg1+ 30.Rxg1 with a stalemate.  Black saves a losing position into a draw.
