   Answer below.

I got a nice e-mail from one of my newsletter and blog readers, John W, who writes:

"I noticed in an ad for your book that you want people to be able to read your book on various devices.  If that's the case, why chose a closed proprietary format like Mobi (used by kindle)?

I've got an e-reader that I'll have in a week or so.  Couldn't afford the expensive kindle types but a $25 one works.

Then I look and notice that it can't read kindle.  A little more checking and guess what? Almost nothing but a kindle can read kindle.

There is a conversion technique - it seems complicated and requires a particular version of the kindle for pc application.

Have you heard of authorstand.com?  They allow you to sell your books through them, but use a pdf format which means anything (including a kindle) can read them.

Well, I'll be getting your book, but it stinks that I won't be able to use it on my little reader because of Amazon's proprietary format.  I suppose once I get it, I'll try to use that weird conversion method.

Hopefully it will work as advertised.  lol

Anyway, just wanted to tell you about this.  I continue to enjoy your newsletter and various articles.  I believe it to be primarily responsible for my current rating of 1839 on chessmaniac.com."

   My response:

   "Hey thanks John!

Well the main reason is that Amazon and Kindle are the "800 pound gorilla" in the eBook world.

I don't know the exact numbers, but something like 75-80% of all eBooks are sold by amazon for Kindle.

They are expanding like crazy also.  Just this past week they started new Kindle stores in Brazil and Canada.

Amazon has all the customers and traffic. They have a nice, easy to use platform for self publishers, and the free software to read a kindle book is available for a lot of platforms (iPhone, iPad, PC, Mac, firefox, android, etc).

We might eventually look at other platforms, iBooks, Nook, etc that would be in the ePub format.  Amazon makes you sign an "exclusive" agreement, that you will list your book only on their site for the first 90 days, so we could not put it on other platforms until this 90 days is over.

Glad to hear that your rating is going up! That's super!"
