his game was played last week between Dean Brown and Paul Anderson at the Wednesday night Panera Bread tournament.

Dean wrote, "Scored my (1472) highest rated win in my 39 year rated chess "career" tonight with a win over Paul Anderson (2043) at the Power's Panera Bread Wednesday G/90 tournament. Wish I could play like this every game."

In the position on the right it is White to move.

Today I want to share some chess links and some news and notes that you might find interesting.

  • The October 2012 Colorado Chess Informant Magazine just came out last week.  You can read it here:  http://www.coloradochess.com.  The Tactics Time column is on page 19.  Editor Fred Spell did a really nice job as always!  It is free for anyone to read, and is 32 pages long in PDF format.

  • Here is a video montage of 101 checkmates in Film that I really enjoyed.  Included are movies and tv shows.  It was a lot of fun to watch (although some parts will make you cringe) http://youtu.be/ofUknaTbQyk

  • This was a very interesting interview with one of the "Chess Hustlers" who play in Washington Square Park in New York City (the park depected in the movie "Searching for Bobby Fischer" http://www.humansofnewyork.com/post/32011671113/the-chess-hustler.  I really liked his ideas about the things you can tell about a person from the way they use their pieces.

  • There is a new chess movie "Brooklyn Castle" coming out on October 19th that looks interesting, and is based on a true story: http://www.brooklyncastle.com/

  • I just got my 1000th newsletter subscriber on Sunday!  And that subscriber is Ruthie "Pink Machine" Wright, who is a London Chess Boxer!  Wow!  Check out her facebook fan page, and be sure and "like" it!  https://www.facebook.com/pinkchessboxingmachine

  • Also, things are going really well with the Tactics Time Kindle ebook that Anthea Carson and I are working on!  We have finished the first draft, and have begun the editing process.  Stay tuned for more details!

   Answer:

Dean "Brown Machine" Brown came out swinging against Paul "http://cschess.webs.com" Anderson.  By move 15 he had a pawn on the 7th rank.

In the above position Dean dished out an upper cut with 24. Rxd6! The rook cannot be captured because of the "threat pin" on the e pawn of Qg7#.  White wins a full piece in an already crushing position.

   Nice work Dean!

   Happy Tactics!

   Your Friend,
  Tim
