Judging Book Covers

Don't judge a cover by its book. ~ Woody Paige, Denver Post Sports Columnist

tactics position Halloween 2012

his position was posted on Rob Hartelt on Facebook, and I thought it was a lot of fun.

In the position on the right it is White to move.  Mate in 21!

    Answer below.

Today we are going to do something completely different both in the problem, and the newsletter content.

I am excited to announce that Anthea Carson and I have started working on a new Amazon Kindle Chess Tactics eBook that we are planning to release around Christmas time!

This is a great team, because we each bring a lot to the table.

I have spent hundreds of hours collecting class player chess games, doing analysis on them, and gathering real world tactics from them.  The problem is that I have all these cool tactics, but they are in a pretty "raw" format.

Anthea brings to the table a great deal of experience with publishing books both on kindle, and with traditional publishers in hardback and paperback, which I have never done.  She is a very active chess player, chess writer, and teacher.

We are both really interested in marketing, and understand the problems and failures with a lot of the current chess materials that are out there right now.

So I am really excited about it, and I know that Anthea is also!

We will be telling you more about this project in the upcoming months, but right now we are working on getting the cover image, and would love to have YOUR input!

We have all heard the cliche "Don't judge a book by it's cover", but of course we all do.  The cover is very important to the success of the book, so we wanted to get this right.

So now is your chance to judge some book covers!

And vote for the designs that you like best.

There are 8 different designs, and you can give each a rating from 1-5 stars, and leave a comment if you want about which ones you like and don't like.

We value your opinion, and will pick the one that gets the highest rating, and use that as our cover!

   Thanks so much!!

   Answer:

White has to start with 1. Qd8+ then continues to circle around the king with one queen pinning the rook, and the second queen giving a check, with black constantly having only one move with get out of check.  Eventually after two circles and two sets of pawn pushes, black runs out of ways to block the checks.

   Happy Tactics!

   Your Friend,
  Tim
